Those who live with the expectation of receiving what they need, rather than putting in the effort to create it with their own heart and hands, will take for granted that which others have exhausted themselves building.
Like a home. There are too many who expect to feel at home because of their material contribution, but don’t know what it takes to create that homely feeling.
Providing the house doesn’t make it a home. Nor does cleaning the house make it a home.
Buying the groceries doesn’t make an endearing family meal. Nor does cooking it.
What connects our efforts with the hearts of those around us is not in the material or dutiful contribution that we make. It’s in the love and appreciation that accompanies how we treat ourselves and them, that connects our hearts and creates a home.
Those who were raised in an environment where their responsibility was more important than their emotional needs will find it easier to judge the quality of their relationships based on what they get from it, rather than how they’re loved or appreciated.
True love and appreciation will automatically result in wanting to create that homely feeling, or that endearing family meal.
Without that love and appreciation, love becomes a transaction, and a check list of things to do so that we avoid blame when things go wrong.
The better we are at that check list, the more we believe we’re truly loving and appreciating life. Until we stop getting what we need.
But, as always, you can’t give what you don’t have.
If you treat yourself like a commodity, your affection for others will be based on the fear of not having them around, or not getting what you need from them.
Who they are and what they need will not feature at all. Sadly, you probably won’t even be aware of it when you’re in that state.
That’s why self awareness is so important. Because it always, always starts with you.

Judging bad behaviour
I have yet to meet someone who behaves poorly when they feel appreciated.
Yet, we’re most often focused on the poor behaviour instead of their feeling of insignificance.
The same is true for us.
Our anger, bitterness, or rebellion is simply an expression intended to reclaim our significance when significant others treat us as if we don’t matter. Or when we feel like we don’t matter to them.
This doesn’t excuse the behaviour, but hopefully, it prompts us to be more understanding rather than judgemental when we find ourselves faced with unacceptable behaviour from those around us.
It’s easier to judge others when being kind or understanding feels like weakness on our part, or if we’re afraid of condoning their behaviour.
Both those assumptions are based on our assumptions about what their intentions are behind their bad behaviour.
Consider that the next time you become aware of how you’ve chosen to judge someone.
Are you judging their behaviour because of what you don’t want to be associated with? Are you judging it because you expect them to be better than that? Or are you judging it because it undermines your role in their life?
Whichever one it is, judgement should be reserved for the courts, and understanding and compassion should drive our interactions with those around us so that we can encourage the best in them, rather than judge the worst in them.
And if you want to understand why you’re driven towards assumptions about what drives your behaviour, or the behaviour of those around you, get a copy of my book, The Egosystem.
It answers exactly such questions so that you might be able to find that elusive peace that you need within your soul.

Prisons of our minds
Without realising it, we create most of the boundaries and the dependencies that we have on others, often without them being aware of it.
One of the reasons we do this is because that is our code of life that we’re honouring.
It’s our way of respecting or protecting what we see as sacred in that relationship.
However, it’s based on the assumption that our partner shares the same values, and values the same things.
Healthy communication will make such misalignment of expectations easier to deal with, and resolve.
But, the moment we tell someone what we need from them, we create an opportunity for doubt within ourselves about whether they’re doing something out of obligation, or sincerity.
That doubt is the beginning of the prison walls that we erect around ourselves, which slowly isolates us from our partner because we’re expecting them to notice what we need.
But expectations are important in a relationship.
Without it, the relationship loses value and the trust fades.
To avoid this, we need to develop a healthy emotional maturity in the relationship so that issues of trust, expectations, and duty can be discussed in ways that don’t threaten the self-worth of your partner.
More than this, we also need to realise that if we focused on what we’re not getting, and also focused only on what we’re giving, chances are good that we are unaware of what they need from us beyond the assumptions that we’ve made.
Thus, the prisons of our minds become the prisons of our lives.

Two rules for life
There are two rules that I wish more people would apply in their lives.
Rules that will result in more sincerity and less hypocrisy.
More trust, less betrayal.
More wholesome relationships, less infidelity and betrayal.
The two rules are simple.
Firstly, don’t exhaust yourself explaining your behaviour to people who don’t matter. This not only gives you a false sense of your significance when they pretend to listen, it also gives them a false sense of significance in your life when they believe that you’re explaiming yourself because they matter to you.
Secondly, when choosing who matters, be sure that you’re doing it based on who really matters to you. They must be consequential to your happiness and sense of belonging in this world. If not, you’ll surround yourself with anyone and everyone that you want must care, because you need to fill the void of human connection in your life.
Sometimes we think that by being polite we’re treating others with respect. However, when that polite attitude leads people to believe that they’re significant when they’re not, it causes more hurt and betrayal when they realise that you were just being polite, rather than sincere.
That’s how being insincere to avoid hurting someone’s feelings causes more hurt than you would’ve caused had you been honest and sincere in the first place. .
Be sincere, always. Even if it means that you will be unpopular for that moment.
That moment of unpopularity could save you and others from a lifetime of disappointment and pain.

Empty promises
Some promises are broken before they’re even sealed.
Some are honoured before they’re even made.
The promises that are sincere will be blessed in their outcomes, well beyond the obligation that they carry.
But the promise made out of obligation or compromise will always be burdensome and restrained in its fulfilment.
Like apologies, promises are often made to avoid an unpleasant moment, rather than to create a beautiful one.
It is this insincerity more than anything else that destroys what could be a beautifully fulfilling relationship.
It is in the nuances and innuendos of how we honour the commitments that we make that leaves the most defining impression, and not just the fact that we kept our word.
No one wants to feel like a burden or an obligation.
When we lack sincerity in fulfilling our promises, or following through on our apologies, that is exactly what our unspoken words scream at those who cherish us.
It tells them that they’re not important, only us keeping our word matters to us because we value our image more than we value them.
Let your unspoken words reflect sincerity and conviction, and not leave room for doubt or ugliness.
Anything less is a lie.

Enabling our oppressors
We only give others permission to disrespect us when we disrespect ourselves first.
Disrespect of the self takes many shapes and forms including compromising our values for personal gain, accepting abuse from fear of abandonment, restraining our contribution from fear of rejection, and more.
When treating ourselves with disrespect becomes the norm, accepting disrespect becomes the theme of our lives.
Reclaiming our space in relationships with significant others then becomes a struggle, because without realising it, we gave them permission to treat us badly.
Of course, the fact that they may have taken up the opportunity to treat us badly confirms their disrespect for themselves as well.
And that’s how we end up in relationships where respect is optional, and being together becomes a matter of convenience that we justify in many ways, including doing it for the children, not wanting to be seen as a failure, nor wanting to return to our parent’s home and bringing shame to them, not wanting to be alone, and more.
That’s when life becomes empty, and joy is replaced with bitterness. Break that cycle before it breaks you, because when you’re broken, you become a liability to this world, rather than a blessing.
And this world has enough social liabilities already. Please be better than that. You deserve it, and so does everyone around you.
