If you need to remind yourself that you’re enough, you convinced yourself that you weren’t enough.
No one can do that to you without your agreement or consent.
Reminders, or affirmations have their place in getting us back on track when we become distracted from the truth of who we are.
The moment we need to do either beyond a moment in time, it means that we stopped believing what was once a truth, and now need to find reason to convince ourselves that we’re capable of being that way again.
While there may be truth in that thought process, it also means that we’ve yet to believe that we are what we think we could be, and we therefore convince ourselves that it’s not true in the present moment, but may be true at some future point.
Again, this way of thinking simply reinforces the belief that we’re not who we want to be.
The question therefore is, by whose standard are we judging ourselves when we see ourselves as being less than who we think we are?
If we were judging ourselves by our own standard, our reflections would be an assessment of our growth, rather than a need to convince ourselves that we’re something or someone that we’re not.

Who says you’re not enough?

When fear serves you poorly
People willingly buy into uninformed theories, or even hearsay, because it validates their fears.
We need our fears to be validated when we’re afraid of appearing incompetent, or feeling insignificant.
This is the beginning of the slide towards losing yourself to the opinions of the collective as you focus on belonging more than you focus on being true to yourself.
For some, isolation is such a daunting thought because they are afraid of discovering who they are, and the risk that they may realise that they’re not good enough.
You are only as good as you think you are. And if you find yourself convincing yourself about something that has no real substance to make it believable, you’ll find yourself constantly on edge each time that ‘truth’ feels threatened, because you’re afraid that someone else might just expose it to be a lie.
Be true to yourself, have the courage to face your fears, and don’t follow the herd.
The path towards peace is not cheap, but it’s worth it.

Awakening beauty
There is a beauty in awakening the soul that is only ever experienced by those who have the courage to stir it from its slumber.
Fear doesn’t only make us aggressive towards those that don’t deserve it, it also convinces us that what we have is all we’ll ever be capable of achieving.
Courage results from believing in the value of what we need, and pursuing it as if our life will remain incomplete without it.
Don’t wait until your final sleep arrives before realising that you prevented yourself from living.
Your past only defines the experience and skill that you have to navigate your future. It doesn’t, and never will define your future. -

Hope and faith…two peas in a pod
Sometimes I lose the only thing that I can’t afford to lose. Hope.
And then I scramble after it knowing that everything else is worthless without it.
Hope is something that cannot be denied, or destroyed.
Like faith, it can only be redirected.
When we give up hope in our dreams, we invest hope in the relief that we hope to feel after abandoning the struggle. Or the pursuit.
Wherever we direct our hope, that is how our hope will serve us.
Invest your hope with care. Not with reckless abandon. -

The Beauty of Defeat – PechaKucha Style
A PechaKucha style presentation format that I presented in front of a live audience at a bookstore in Johannesburg, South Africa. I discuss the beauty of defeat, and why moments that appear to deflate us should be embraced, rather than blocked out. -

It’s time to rethink mental health
The human experience is not an illness. Protect your mental health. Don’t allow your reality to be labelled as something other than what it is. It is your experience of the ups and downs in your life. When you find yourself with more bad days than good days, it’s because you need to do something differently. Mental health is about hope. The more hope we have for experiencing joy tomorrow, the better our mental health today. When you find hope is scarce, or difficult to hold onto, reconnect with your passion and your principles, and trust that it’s not hope that dies, but just our distracted state that makes it difficult for us to sometimes find. Gently clear away the distractions, and reconnecting with hope will come naturally.

Live, Laugh, Love, and leave a Legacy

Live to love, to laugh, and to leave a legacy. Your material success will only be celebrated after your death if it is of benefit to others. Accumulation of wealth to stroke your ego not only deprives you of the joy of human connection, it also denies you the bonds of beauty that feeds your soul. Laughter should not be sourced from a business deal that outwitted your opponent. Such laughter will mock you in your later years when you realise that your fascination with wealth was merely a drop in the ocean of joy compared to what joy you could have achieved in investing the incredible talents you have to brighten up the faces of loved ones, or even strangers. Wealth is a means to an end. Don’t get so caught up in the means that you completely lose sight of your end.
