Day Two: Journal 10 Things You’re Grateful For

The first day was off to an easy start, unless you had problems switching off and falling asleep the hour earlier than usual. Day 2 will hopefully be a bit more encouraging if sleeping is not your thing.

Gratitude is easy to recognise in the obvious things that bring us immediate comfort or relief. Having a job, a place to stay, being surrounded by loved ones, and so on. We know that if we take them for granted it increases the risk of it being snatched away. Either by someone else, or through neglect.

Health is often something taken for granted, and so is time. My challenge to myself is therefore to journal ten things that I am grateful for that is not so obvious, but is totally relatable. Importantly though, it must not only be moments of highs, but also moments of lows.

Ten Things I Appreciate

In no particular order, these are the ten things that I feel grateful for, or that I believe I should be more grateful for:

  1. I’m grateful for the crisp air that I am able breathe in each morning before sunrise when most of the world around me is still asleep. It’s more invigorating than caffeine, and reminds me that purity still exists.
  2. I’m grateful for the ability and capacity that I have which allows me to take care of others. Without it, all I’ll have is material possessions without any meaningful sense of fulfilment from it.
  3. I’m grateful for the fascination that I have over the mundane details in nature. It reminds me of how the most amazing of man’s accomplishments can be dwarfed by the simple beauty of the heart of a wild flower, or the toes of a gecko.
  4. I’m grateful for having been able to rediscover my passion and purpose in life. Exiting the corporate world was a difficult but necessary decision, without which my bitterness at the toxic environment that I experienced each day would have continued to shape my view of the world.
  5. I’m grateful for the opportunities to be able to invest in good relationships. It would not have been possible if it wasn’t for those that betrayed my trust over the years because they saved me from investing in bad relationships instead.
  6. I’m grateful for the losses that I’ve experienced in life, because without it, I would have taken so much more for granted without realising it. It is my many colourful experiences with loss that made me appreciate the value of the present moment.
  7. I’m grateful for not having allowed society and age to define me. It has given me the ability to be more whimsical, energised, and enthusiastic about life than many of the withering souls I see around me.
  8. I’m grateful for the feel of natural textures around me. It calms my soul when the synthetic life gets overwhelming.
  9. I’m grateful for being a complex soul. If I was any different, there would be many without morbid entertainment because of my exploits. 🙂
  10. I’m grateful for being able to compile a list of things I’m grateful for, without having to include the things that we usually take for granted. It means that I have so much more to be grateful for.


Writing this list took me longer than I expected. It might mean that I may be taking these things for granted from time to time, or it could mean that living this way has become second nature. Assuming the latter to be true is dangerous, because that’s when complacency sets in. So perhaps the practice of journalling is not lost on me after all, even though it has never been something that I actively pursued or encouraged.

However, I suspect that in many ways, my blog serves as my journal. Maybe I’m not so different after all. Maybe I’m just the naive one that journals in public while everyone else keeps their introspection closer to their chests.

Whatever it is, I am the better for it. It allows me to gain an almost tangible grip on the subtleties that escape me often, and hopefully, it gives a reader of my ramblings some solace in recognising that they are not alone in such doubts, contemplations, or failings. In that lies reason for yet more gratitude.
